Linkedin: the social media, your career needs

What if scrolling could get you hired, and not distracted?

Welcome to Engineering.
Now that you entered college,
it is time to plan for your career.

Instagram and Twitter are something you need to have a good social life. LinkedIn is something you need not for you but to have a good career.

Being visible to the people who want to hire you is step 1 in getting hired. You certainly don’t wish to settle for a mid job, do you?

What is LinkedIn, and Why Should You Care?

LinkedIn is just like Instagram and Twitter,
except that it is a tad bit more serious.
It’s a social platform where connecting with strangers is
encouraged and not frowned upon.
It’s a platform where you learn a lot from others’ achievements
and don’t envy them ( looking at you instagram )
It’s a platform where you can tell about yourself
more than a single-page PDF.

Personal Perspective

I have personally benefited greatly from LinkedIn.
I post my achievements and keep my profile updated.
This helped me get job opportunities, internships, mentorships, speaker opportunities, and much, much more.

Personally, I have benefited from LinkedIn
more than the platform has benefited from me.

That’s why I want you to do this as the first thing after joining college.

Pop Some Myth Bubbles

“LinkedIn is only for job seekers.”

I cannot state how flawed this thought is.
LinkedIn is more than finding a job.
It is a place where you get industry updates,
a place to network with amazing people
who are ready to help at all times.

It is also a place for you to build a brand for yourself (more about this later).

“It’s boring.”

Although this is entirely subjective and
you might find the platform boring at times.
LinkedIn, as a business platform, is slowly moving
towards a social platform.

Did you know we have something similar to reels and TikTok on LinkedIn?

That’s how desperately LinkedIn is pushing content.
LinkedIn is filled with memes, fun quotes, witty posts, and more.
It is how you take it in and act on it.

“I don’t have enough experience to be on LinkedIn.”

I started my LinkedIn right after my 12th board exams with 0 XP
My entire experience is because of LinkedIn.
I started something small, posted it on LinkedIn.
That led me to job opportunities,
which gave me a lot more opportunities, just like dominoes
So my entire experience is because of posting on LinkedIn.

I’m an Introvert, I Have Nothing to Share

If you are too shy to post about yourself and your successes,
who will tell those stories?

You are going to lose out on opportunities
just because you think you are not social?

Being social is not a character, merely a skill!
People work with people they trust.

Have 1,000 skills, but not even 10 people know you?
You can’t be entrusted with any work easily.

Know 10 skills, but 1,000 people know you?
You have a higher chance of getting bigger opportunities.

‘Fortune favors the bold’ is old.
‘Fortune favors the seen’ is the new one that you should start practicing.

Practical Tips to Get Started

Let’s make sure you have everything in check.

✅ A clear, good-looking profile photo goes a long way.
✅ A custom banner would uplift your profile.
✅ Your headline is who you are; make sure it’s interesting and unique.
✅ Sit and write, I repeat, write about yourself; please don’t use GPT : (
✅ Fill up the certifications; it’s important to build trust.
✅ Add all your skills; take some time to add them all.
✅ If you have any publications, volunteering experience, or honors,
make sure to add them for a nice touch to your profile.

Now that you’re done, start posting!
I know it’s easier said than done,
but pull yourself to write that first post. 💪

Tune That Algorithm

40% of LinkedIn is ads,
but 60% of it is in your control. 💪

Here’s how you tune it!

1️⃣ Connecting with someone new?
You will see their post for at least 2 weeks.
Interaction with it increases its prevalence and vice versa.

2️⃣ 1 comment leads to seeing their next post, reposting it 1.5 times,
and liking it 3 times has a similar effect.

3️⃣ Spending more time on one post will make LinkedIn show similar posts.

4️⃣ Messaging people makes you see their posts 70% of the time.

5️⃣ Saving a post makes LinkedIn show you the next post 90% of the time.

Social Media Is Not Evil, If You Know How to Use It

Now that you have a good understanding of what LinkedIn is,
why it is used, why you should use it, and how to use it.
Start that LinkedIn acc if you still haven’t and start posting about your college and your experience in the first few days.

Here I have given you the idea for your first post.
Make sure you act on it : )
